The Ali Institute of Education is a teacher-education institute committed to improving education in Pakistan and promoting professionalism among teachers. 

We provide quality pre-service and in-service teacher education and offer advisory services for school management, school development and curriculum practices. The Institute is also committed to dissemination of information and advocacy of appropriate policies and practices in education through indigenous research and publications.

AIE seeks to especially address the educational needs of rural and female teachers and to promote education to under-privileged and marginalised sections of society.

Since 1992, the Ali Institute has grown in prestige and has developed a wider focus on improving the quality of education in Pakistan. At the Ali Institute, we believe that teachers are agents of change, able to transform education in Pakistan. To realise this vision, the Ali Institute offers programmes of study, short courses and workshops in initial teacher education and continuing professional development, consultancy and development services, promotes research, dialogue and advocacy, regularly publishes a research journal, and supports community links and outreach for the education community.

The AIE Campus has large modern classrooms, beautiful gardens, a sports field, a modern and large auditorium for events and formal functions, a well-stocked and renowned library of education, students' lounge, a cafeteria, girls' hostels (Perwin Hall and Mubarik Begum Hall), language lab, IT lab, AV lab, science labs and a bookshop.

Previous Projects

National Outreach Programme (TARCs) (UNDP)

Year: 1993 - 1995

The TARC Program was aimed to develop the school teachers and educational managers into reflective practitioners and improving their professional capabilities so that the children of Pakistan may get access to quality education. The program addressed training needs of public sector primary school teachers in using innovative models of delivery. It developed linkages with institutions imparting pre-service training, Provincial Department of Education, and District Education officials

This project was a continuation of the UNDP project however this time the funding was provided by the different corporate entities of Pakistan.

Students are basic factor in education sector. The basic purpose of this project was to give awareness and knowledge regarding non-violent ways and how they can modify their behaviour with their peers.

Creative Learning Project – Reading and Writing with and for Children

The Creative Learning Project is unique.It implies the importance of engaging children in an overall holistic approach which suggests that writing and reading are closely related. Better writers tend to be better readers and better readers produce better writing. Parents and teachers can take advantage of the connection between reading and writing by showing their students how enjoyable reading is and the different creative approaches taken by their facilitators can support children’s overall comprehension of reading material. Reading for imagination and creativity inspires children to think critically by encouraging them to expand their understanding of self and the world. These activities fuelintellectual and cognitive development as well as creativity through the use of imagery and fantasy. Moreover, they help children to engage with the written word, to learn how to use writing and speech as a medium of expression. This project is enabling children to read books, to express themselves through creative writing and art as multi-sensory activities is necessary to help develop their ability to think critically and through a myriad of ways tap into their creative potential.


Another innovative aspect of our work is that the best stories from each school will be published in the form of books which will then be disseminated all across the country. The premise underpinning this project is the production of short stories books, written by children, which can be used by teachers in language classes.


The activities included in this project have not been experimented with before in the geographic areas of the project. Our partners are low-income private schools whose teachers have not had a chance to attend any trainings and their pedagogical approach is not activity based. After the trainings the teachers’ reaction was of genuine concern. They expressed that such trainings are not only beneficial but essential to improve the student’s communication skills. The trained teachers are supporting the activity-based model in their schools and are also helping their peers to implement similar models in their classrooms.




The duration of the project is 20 months. It was initiated in November, 2015 and is expected to end in June, 2017.


Impact of the Project









PEF Project

We have been successfully awarded a project with PEF (Punjab Education Foundation). The competition was stringent and rigorous but the result was in our favor at the end. In this project, AIE has been given the responsibility of training 60 master trainers. These trainers will eventually train the teachers of all PEF partner schools. The budget for the project is Rs. 2.1 million.




Future Projects

Creative Learning Project (Expansion)

The project with USAID has been implemented in three districts of Punjab; Lahore, Hafizabad, Bhakkar. The response from teachers and students has been over-whelming. We have also been approached by school administrations from other districts of Punjab as well. Considering the project’s success thus far, we have decided to expand it into other districts of Punjab. Under our expansion programme we have planned to target the following districts: Kasur, Shiekhupura, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Jhang&Okara. The required budget for this project is PKR 4.99 million per district.


Project Share a Book!

During our work on the USAID Creative Learning Project, we observed that over 95% of low-income private schools did not have the facility of libraries in their schools. This project was developed to help these schools set-up a library and ensure that the teachers and students use it. Through this project we will provide books for libraries and trainings to teachers to manage it. Follow-up visits will also be conducted to ensure the libraries are being used properly by the schools. A book drive to collect the books for these libraries has been initiated. The total budget for this project is Rs. 1 million and we are currently seeking donors for this important initiative.


Learning through Art

Over time various researches have proven that Art is very important for a student as it helps develop their cognitive ability and problem solving skills. Based on this, a project is being developed to integrate art in subjects like Maths, Science and Language courses. Art is commonly ignored by most of the schools in Pakistan with majority of schools deeming it un-necessary or even time-wasting. Through this project we will attempt to change this perception of the schools and introduce a curriculum where Arts will be integrated with other subjects.


Project Principal Licensure

The project is seeking to implement and record an approach to licensing school leaders (Principals/Vice Principals) in relation to Standards for Education Leadership. The principals will be required to demonstrate that they are able to provide strategic school management and develop the school in ways which support best practices in teaching.


Project Hygiene: Little Doctors

We have worked extensively with low-income private schools on various projects. One thing that has been observed repeatedly has been the hygiene of the students studying in these schools. Students of these schools do not have any awareness about taking care of their classrooms, washrooms, clothes and bodies. Due to this obliviousness, they suffer from the many easily avoidable diseases. Keeping this in view, a project has been developed to teach these students about the importance of hygiene and the steps they can take to improve themselves and their surroundings.

The main aim of this project is to improve the hygiene habits of students belonging to low-income schools.  We plan to target 50 low income private schools and the total budget of this project is Rs. 5.419 million.
